Quantum System Engineer
The role
Develop, build, and test the hardware connecting our quantum chips to the outside world, turning system requirements into high-performing hardware assemblies.
Groove Quantum is building the scalable quantum computer of the future based on semiconductor germanium quantum dots. As our processors scale towards larger systems, your main mission will be to design, simulate, assemble, and characterise hardware across the complete signal chain, from processor packaging and cryogenic wiring to filtering and room-temperature electronics. Working at the intersection of physics and engineering, you will perform thermal and noise calculations, build models, and conduct hands-on lab characterisations to trace and eliminate performance limitations.
Main responsibilities
Hardware development & testing: Design, build, and test analogue, RF, and mixed-signal hardware across the signal chain from concept through to a working assembly.
Lab characterisation: Characterise hardware performance in the lab, from individual low-temperature components up to the fully integrated signal chain.
Modelling & calculations: Perform noise, thermal, and signal integrity calculations/simulations, contributing empirical data to overall system budgets.
Performance investigation: Trace and investigate hardware performance limitations across the chip, package, signal chain, or instrumentation.
R&D integration & documentation: Document designs and findings to inform future architectural decisions while collaborating with measurement, fabrication, software, and electronics teams.
The team
You will join our hands-on hardware development team, working closely alongside our Quantum Hardware Architect (open role). You will also collaborate regularly with quantum measurement engineers, device physicists, electronics engineers, and external suppliers. This role reports directly to the CTO and has no direct reports, focusing on hands-on experimental execution, modelling, and prototyping.
Key qualifications
We are looking for a pragmatic, goal-driven, and inquisitive engineer who loves hands-on lab work, debugging hardware, and understanding the physical principles behind device behaviour.
Education: MSc or PhD in electrical engineering, applied physics, or a related field.
Hardware design: Experience designing, building, and characterising analogue, RF, or mixed-signal hardware, including knowledge of noise, signal integrity, filtering, and PCB design.
Cryogenics interest: Familiarity with cryogenic systems, or a strong drive to master low-temperature engineering.
Quantitative & lab skills: Strong analytical ability to build quantitative hardware models, backed by enthusiasm for hands-on assembly, lab measurements, and testing.
Pragmatic execution: Ability to work independently, escalate when necessary, and apply CAD/RF layout tools or device physics concepts to practical engineering problems.
At Groove Quantum, we’re all about fresh perspectives and different backgrounds. Fun fact: research shows most people talk themselves out of applying because they don't hit 100% of the job specs. Don't do that! If this role excites you, hit apply anyway. We want to hear from you!
